5 - Day Master Class Clay Sculpture with Brendan Hesmondhalgh. Dates:

The master class is a course designed for intermediate to advanced artists /potters /ceramicists /sculptors. It is not recommended for beginners. This course is designed to progress the makers skills and knowledge that little bit further.

All aspects of materials, material choice, kilns/ kiln firings, finishing will be covered.

There are daily demonstrations to the group and individual as required, help is always on hand. Numbers are restricted on this course to allow students enough tutor time.

The materials provided on this course are the materials I use myself and are all of professional quality. There is no restriction or extra charges for materials or firings on this course. The only additional charge will be for a glazing day at a later date if required.

Part of the course will include an excursion for research and preliminary studies. (Weather permitting).

Predominately it is an animal sculpture course although I am flexible on the subject matter. We focus on technique and pushing the material to its limits to achieve exciting results. The work produced on this course is often on a larger scale.

You may find yourself making a large scale bust or a series of sculptures. We focus on movement, expression and clayness!!!

The course is designed to complete a finished piece of clay sculpture and focused upon the student leaving with the feeling of being inspired to go back to your own studios/classes/homes, armed with new techniques to try.

There are no general size restrictions as we have very large kilns!

We look forward to meeting you.

The afternoon will continue with a practical workshop in clay, where everyone will have the opportunity to produce their own mini sculpture in clay, guidance will be provided.

This course is for those who would like to ‘dip there toe in the water’, and hopefully go away being inspired to have a go independently, or to attend a short course at the sculpture lounge studios in the future. Anybody attending a 1 day taster course will be given a voucher for 10% discount on booking a short course run by Brendan Hesmondhalgh.

Italian Painting Excursion with Jamie Frost Dates 22/7/14 - 31/7/14

Following the success of this summer's painting excursion, I shall be taking another group to the Centro D'arte Verrocchio in Tuscany in July. This will be a slightly longer stay (9 days) to allow more in-depth work and exploration of the area. The whole studio is booked for our group and to reflect this there will be a balance of plein air and studio based work.

The day consists of a mixture of formal teaching (mornings and/or after siesta), painting plein air in the morning, siesta, further painting in the afternoon, followed by the evening meal on the terrace. I can assure you the food at the centro is always delicious. Afterwards we often amble to the local bar for a glass or two. Most evenings in Casole seem to promise some form of entertainment, be it live music, street markets or opera in the town square. There is also the option of making an excursion to Siena or San Gimignano.

Prices vary depending upon room size, but start from as little as £1100 with early-bird discount (£50). To secure the discounted rate, a deposit would be needed before 1st Jan 2014. The course fee includes your room, use of the studios, breakfast and evening meals and airport transfers to Pisa.

3 - Day Portrait Sculpture in Clay with Jamie Frost. Dates 8/5/14 - 10/5/14

For three days you will work from a live model to study the art of clay portrait sculpture. This is something I have a keen interest in- I recently won an award from the Society of Portrait Sculptors for my work entitled ‘Rag and Bone’.

We’ll start by drawing the model. The act of drawing makes you focus intently on the subject and you will notice far more than you would otherwise.

Then we use clay, on a small scale at first, working quickly and moving the model around to get lots of different angles.

The process becomes more refined and analytical as we start to make life size clay heads. Measurement tools become useful and there are more techniques to be applied. As we continue this study over the weekend I’ll introduce you to the work of many other sculptors and talk you through the different approach taken in my own clay portraits.

As you get to grips with the process you’ll also discover that there’s a variety of ways to make sculpture. You’ll also discover one of the fascinating aspects of portraiture- a portrait is not merely a likeness, there’s some of yourself in there too. Whether it’s how you handle the clay or where you choose to elaborate and edit, it’s quite astonishing.

You can leave your head to dry, fire it in a kiln or have a mould and cast made.* If you’re particularly pleased I can put you in touch with an excellent foundry who’ll cast it in bronze!

This masterclass includes a choice of lunches, refreshments and all tools and materials.

Weekend Stone Sculpture at the Hepworth with Jamie Frost. Dates 5/4/14- 6/4/14

This year, instead of the usual stone carving masterclass at the sculpture lounge, I shall be leading a course of stone carving at the Hepworth Gallery. (5th and 6th April)We shall be working in the Hepworth Gallery, Wakefield. The theme of the weekend is abstraction, figuration, and the relationships between forms in Hepworth's work. We will use drawing and clay to understand the thought processes of abstraction before making carvings in Limestone. I have already collected the materials for this project, as they are sometimes hard to come by, and it's mere presence at the studio is filling me with excitement at the possibilities. This course is perfectly suited to beginners.

4 - Day Drawing and Painting From the Figure with Jamie Frost. Dates 14/5/14-17/5/14

This masterclass is suitable for beginners but is also an opportunity for those with some experience of the subject to really get their teeth into a sustained painting or series of works. This may also be suitable for painters of other subjects to direct their attention towards the figure. Drawing and figurative art are particular passions of mine- many of my solo shows have been of drawing. I am an award winning portrait sculptor and paint from the figure with oils.

The class structure includes an introduction to a range of figurative art approaches, working from both male and female models. We will explore the language of drawing and painting- line, tone, texture and other formal elements using a range of media and a variety of long and short poses. We'll also discuss colour theory and look at how you apply paint to the figurative subject matter.

There will be some longer poses of two-three hours and this will be an opportunity to explore longer drawing methods (eg: measuring) and compositional issues. We will also look at the compelling art of portraiture. Whilst there will be lots of exploration of technique and the discipline of figure drawing, there will also be exercises and discussion of the expressive power of figurative work.

There will be a sustained study of at least two days at the end of the course. This is one pose with one model and any furniture/props agreed by the group.

This masterclass includes lunches, refreshments and some materials. Basic oil and acrylic paints are provided, along with drawing media and paper. Canvasses and professional paint can be provided at additional cost, or brought with you.

It’s a great introductory level course, but equally suitable for the advanced maker. A lot of work is achieved in a short space of time. A course brief will be sent prior to your arrival to give you some guidance on the daily structure of the course.

All aspects of materials, material choice, kilns/ kiln firings, finishing will be covered.

There are daily demonstrations to the group and individual when required, help is always on hand. Numbers are restricted on this course to allow students enough tutor time.

The materials provided on this course are the materials I use myself and are all of professional quality. There are no extra charges for materials or firings. The only additional charge will be for a glazing day at a later date if required.

Predominately it is an animal sculpture course although i am flexible on the subject matter. We focus on technique and pushing the material to its limits to achieve exciting results.

The course is very much designed to send you away with a finished piece of clay sculpture and feeling very much inspired to go back to your own studios/classes, armed with new techniques to try.

We look forward to meeting you
